This photo shows a line of mounted police facing a large group of demonstrators near Union Square in San Francisco. The demonstrators are crowded along Powell(?) street, and they are contained behind a rope barricade. Many of them are carrying signs with protest slogans. A "no-man's land" of 10 or 15 feet separates the line of mounted police from the line of demonstrators. This area is empty, except for a well-dressed man and woman who are walking alont the line of demonstrators. The police officers are equipped with riot gear. Beyond the police and demonstrators, businesses are visible, includingLufthansa, Dr. M.B. Rich optometrist, Hotel Stratford, and the Hof Brau restaurant. Decorative street lights line the street, and the street sign for Geary Street is visible above the mass of demonstrators. The word "Beginning" is written in black pen on the back of the photograph. On May 12, an anti-war demonstration protesting President Richard Nixon's Vietnam war policies (specifically Nixon's recently announced strategy to mine North Vietnamese harbors) was held in front of the St. Francis Hotel. Both California Govenor Ronald Reagan and New York Govenor Nelson Rockefeller were staying at the hotel during an official "kick-off" for Nixon's re-election campaign. Three thousand plus demonstrators attended the noontime rally, which turned violent when a police motorcycle was set afire. There were sixty arrests and numerous injuries.
