Object is from San Francisco Mint Museum which closed in 1994. No original catalog card. Ray Hillman's comments: Gold ladle used in refining area of milling operation to handle molten metal (gold) into ingots. Object is both cast iron and forged. A bolt attaches the forged handle to the cast bowl of the ladle.
