Handwritten on the back of the photograph: "Dress shop on Univ[ersity] Av. was having a "shattering sale" and somebody smashed a hole in the "S" to prove it." The words "shattering sale" had been written in large letters on the glass. A sizeable hole can be seen in the first "s".
