The Tribune clipping affixed to the back of the photo reads "Last residents of Oakland's first home were Mr. and Mrs. William J. Maher, shown moving out household possessions as the building concluded 97 years of service as a dwelling." The Trib's date stamp on the clipping is July 2, 1946. A pencilled notation adds the fact that the Mahers were moving their belongings from the Chase House. In this scene, the Mahers are going down the front steps of their house, numbered 404, he with a sewing machine and she with an elongated, rectangular framed mirror. She is wearing a cloth head covering and outer coat, he a fedora and short sleeved shirt. The notation on the back of the photo, "H-P People," refers to the Tribune's alphabetic filing system for photographs of people. That notation is also marked "Centennial" but it appears improbable that the event would be a part of the 150th anniversary of California statehood.[JM 8/29/2000]
