Type on paper, back of image: "Nathan's other family live in a large old house which the owners, Horst and Eva, are renovating for sale. They live here with their son, Waldo, Maty and her daughter, Nanette, and another man, who didn't want to be in the photograph, Gordon, and Nathan. They all have dinner together each evening. Otherwise they live rather seperate lives. Eva told me that she and Horst have lived in groups except for the first year of their marriage. She wonders whther couples become bored living alone. "what do they have to say to one antoher at dinner every night?"; I commented to Gordon that the conventional nuclear families I'd photographed seemed to be more self-conscious and anxious about their image than the groups. He said he'd not felt cuncomfortable in our session and imagines that peopl such as him who have "already been through divorce and seeing the family disintegrate no longer have to be afraid of it because they've already been there."; A month later I learn ed that Mary and the man who'd not wanted to be in the photograph had moved out with Mary's daugther and taken an apartment. They'd met here.
