Content description:
This is a copy photograph of a lost daguerreotype by Carleton Watkins. The photo shows a man, supposedly James Marshall, standing in front of Sutter's Mill in Coloma. The original daguerreotype was taken in 1853 to commemorate Marshall's discovery of gold on the site in January 1848. This photograph may have been shot from the original daguerreotype because the edges of the images are rounded like the image has been in a case.
