This is another illustration for the Golden State Company, one of the how-to-do-it things, how to make a little doll house. The hands are the hands of David Stover who lived with me and was my partner and darkroom worker for ten years. His hands were so expressive that in one issue of the little Golden State magazine when a female model didn't show up, by putting some pancake makeup on [Stover's hands] and powdering them and smoothing them, I could use them for a woman's hands and in the same issue use them in something like this picture as a man's hands." (Roger Sturtevant, interview with Joyce Minick, transcribed in catalog sheets.)
