The Tribune clipping, dated June 29, 1958, on the back of the photo reads, "GIGANTIOC JOB--This view of U.S. Highway 40 looking west toward Colfax which is in the background, gives graphic testimony of the magnitude of the highway project over the Sierra. The new highway is shown in the center with the present roadway to the left. The stretch now udner construction joins with a section already completed at Colfax. The segment shown will be completed by October 1." Three "ribbons" run from bottom to top in this photo; from left to right they are Highway 40; its successor, later to be named Interstate 80; and the Southern Pacific's railroad tracks, all going through the the foothills at the beginning of the climb to the Donner Summit. [In my view, the town described in the clipping as Colfax is more likely Auburn, California, some 15 miles west of Colfax JM 10/23/2000]
