In 1868 and 1869 the town was the construction headquarters for Samuel B. Reed, Chief of Construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. By January 15, 1869, the tracks had reached Echol City from the East, but there were many tunnels and bridges to be completed and track to be laid down the weber Canyon before the trains could reach Promontory north of the Great Salt Lake.
