Handwritten notes in Proof Sheet Binder Volume 32 Insert in general caption The WPA study of "Migratory cotton pickers in Arizona" (p.6) describes the condition of average Arizona cotton camps in 1937. Conditions in farmers camps of the Elroy district in 1940 were about the same or a little better than those described in the study. Camps are occupied sometimes entirely by whites, by colored, or by Mexicans and Indians sometimes nationalities are in the same camp see neg. Farmers camps for cottom pickers like Elroy district every few miles. Shelter and salvation are of all varieties and degrees. Fortunately there is much sun. Most camps have piped water. On the whole camp standards are better than five years ago. Peddlers and school busses visit the camps. On Saturdays the pickers go to Elroy.
