The Tribune clipping, dated March 29, 1978, on the back of the photo reads " City Center in upper left, Grove Shafter freeway on the right." This is an aerial view looking southwest to the southernmost end of the Grove Shafter Freeway, heading toward the Nimitz freeway at the top of the photo. What is in the way of completing the freeway is a dozen blocks still containing houses and other buildings in its path. (Per notation in 2000.1.1232, the delay was may have been caused by a court injunction.) The route parallels Grove St. Downtown Oakland and its City hall are in the upper left corner. In the background, there is the estuary, portion of Alameda, and a naval aircraft carrier.
