Worn by Chinese that blew up Melrose fuse works, causing a number of deaths and damage to the building. Per History of the Greater San Francisco Bay Region: in 1863 railroad rights were acquired "from Alameda wharf to San Leandro Estuary by way of Melrose." (p.35) "To Antonio Maria Peralta went what became Alameda, Brooklyn, Fruitvale and Melrose." (p. 516) "Oakland by 1927 had plants of the leading corporations...the Union Gas Company, the Durant Motor Company and the National Lead Company of California (Melrose Station)." (p. 525) The 1994 Thomas Guide to Alameda Co. shows Melrose as a section of Oakland below Fruitvale and west of Seminary. The neighborhood guide shows Melrose as CE14. While none of these mention the fuse works, it would seem that the Melrose Fuse Works might have been in the Melrose section of Oakland.
