Hand written on the back, in ink, "L to R. Christine Jorgenson, Agnes Ramage, Edith Brown or Ethel Crandall, Alice Garretson, Lettie G. [for Aletta Marie Garretson] leaning on elbow & Ella G." This photograph is of one of the three Garretson daughters, taken in the backyard of their Hayward, California home. (The girls are all seated on the lawn, vines climb the fence behind them). The three girls to the left (proper right of the photograph) are friends of the Garretson's. Alice is wearing a white shirt with a man-styled tie at her throat, Aletta (leaning on her elbow) is holding a rose in her right hand, Ella is in a dress trimmed with bands of white (perhaps giving the garment a nautical style). Between 1884 and 1890, the Garretsons lived in New Jersey and Pennsylvania so that the children could be exposed to the schools in the east. They returned to California in 1890 and lived in Hayward.
