Tribune caption on the back, March 20, 1944: "Sgt. Thomas Fong, 121 Eighth Street, Oakland, is presented with the Air Medal by Col. Frederick R. Dent Jr., commanding officer of the Liberator group to which Fong belongs. The award, presented to Fong 'somewhere' in England, was for 'courage, coolness and skill displayed in five separate bomber combat missions over enemy Europe.' He had formerly received the Godd Conduct Medal and was wounded in the crash of 'Liberty Bell,' Liberator, in January.- A.P. photo."
