A large group of demonstrators is gathered on one side of a chain link fence at People's Park, Berkeley. A University of California police officer with a billy club walks along the opposite side of the fence. The top of the fence has been bent down by the protesters. Although many of the protesters have backed a few steps away from the fence, two demonstrators [center of photo] appear to be pulling on the fence. In the background, spectators watch from the balcony and from the roof of a nearby apartment building. Two captions from the newspaper are attached to the back of the photograph. The first is dated May 16, 1971. It reads: "Smoke outside a smoke shop (left) pours from a tear gas launcher after it is fired by a policeman. Manacled demonstrator (right) is guarded by riot-equipped police outside Sather Gate. It all started (below) when the 2-year-old fence around People's Park was pulled down earlier Saturday." The second is dated May 15, 1984. It reads: "The fence around People's Park was pulled down, leading to further violence and confrontation." The words "People's Park, Berk" are written in blue ink on the back of the photograph. The words "Fence A-2-1x 5-15-84 w. peoples uf50 cc 39p (combine w/ "sign")" are written in pencil on back corner of the photograph. The words "Berkeley #3 4 col x 51/2" p. 16 3c" are written in black felt pen but have been crossed out with a pencil.
