Photo shows political protest by members of the Ad Hoc Committee. Five protesters, two white males and three white females, are marching in a line inside the lobby(?) of the Oakland Tribune building. A third white male is standing slightly to the left of the line of protesters. On the wall behind the demonstrators is a symbol/sign designating "fallout shelter." A stroller with a toddler is partially visible behind the line of protesters. Photographer has identified three people in the photo with numbered stickers (#17,#29, #19), but I did not find a master key with names for each number. In 1964 the Ad Hoc Committee to End Discrimination organized a number of demonstrations to protest racial discrimination in hiring practices, including protests against Sheraton-Palace, AUto Row, Mel's Drive-in, and the Oakland Tribune. The Ad Hoc Committee to End Discrimination picketed the Tribune building after William F. Knowland, editor and general manager of the Tribune, rejected hiring demands of the Ad Hoc Committee. The Ad Hoc Committee charged that the percentage of minority racial group employment was inadequate, and demanded that minority racial group employment on The Tribune be increased to between 15 and 20 percent of the total employment by Decmeber 15, 1964.
