From caption on back of photograph: "Lake Merritt's ducks, refugees from the Northern cold, were having dinner when this cover picture was made by Tribune Cameraman E. A. (Doc) Rogers. The lake is a duck and goose sanctuary to which the birds return annually with the approach of winter in more severe climes. They are fed twice daily, protected from marauding dogs and mischevious humans, in their haven. Some of the birds return year after year, as shown by tags attached to their legs in previous years. The sanctuary has earned a Nation-wide fame for Oakland." Hundreds of ducks are scattered over the ground at the Lake Merritt duck sanctuary. Some are eating specks of food off the ground.
