This is a picture of a man who was a sea captain. He was very unresponsive when trying to photograph him. I think this is in the 1920's. [I don't know if it was with this picture or not, but in one of my sittings I remember trying to get the sitter to respond.] I was working with the Graflex and I just quickly put my foot out and stepped on his toe, and I got [same expression] to his face." -Roger Sturtevant interview conducted by Joyce Minick
