Photo shows a young white male who has been knocked to the ground. He is lying on his back and is looking up at a police officer holding a billy club. The young man is holding a camera. The two of them are located in a vacant plaza (UC Berkeley, near Sather Gate?) which is strewn with litter. In the background, a bicycle is leaning against a tree and a person is walking by. On the back of the photograph, the phrase "student was thrown to the ground by Policeman" is written in blue ink. In April 1970, UC Berkeley students, as well as non-students, staged anti-war demonstrations over the course of several days. In order to show their opposition to the Vietnam war and the on-campus ROTC presence, protesters marched on California Hall, the location of the chancellor's office, and Callaghan Hall, location of the Naval ROTC'a headquarters. Violence, including rock-throwing, erupted and police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Members of the "Weathermen", a radical faction of the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society), were implicated in the organization of the protests.
