The Tribune clipping, dated April 30, 1957, reads "FREEWAY THROUGH THE CANYON-- Officials gather at the stasrting point of a new freeway to be built through the scenic Truckee River Canyon on U.S. Highway 40 high above the racing river. Picture is near Floriston. Nevada state line is 5-1/2 miles to the right.". This is a three-part photo,at one time glued together to form the view mentioned above. The camera is aimed upstream toward the Donner Summit/Truckee area. Men are gathered at a turnout in old Highway 40, later renamed Interstate 80. Some have driven their cars or pick up trucks to the location, others have been driven in one of the two school buses, and some few have ridden in a Calfiornia Highway Patrol car. On the far side of the river, the there are the main line tracks of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
