First of a series of three photographs attached together with masking tape. Five police officers, dressed in riot gear, are subduing a white male demonstrator. The protester has been knocked to the ground, and the officers are beating him with their billy clubs. The protester is trying to protect himself by covering his head with his arms, curling into a ball, and rolling on the ground. The protester's black cowboy hat is lying in the middle of the street. Behind them, two cars (one is a VW Bug) are parked along the street. On the back of second photograph (H98.1.970) a description is written in black felt pen. "Police drove into the crowd which scattered and jumped out and this is one they caught. Dana between Haste and Dwight Way" In April 1970, UC Berkeley students, as well as non-students, staged anti-war demonstrations over the course of several days. In order to show their opposition to the Vietnam war and the on-campus ROTC presence, protesters marched on California Hall, the location of the chancellor's office, and Callaghan Hall, location of the Naval ROTC's headquarters. Violence, including rock-throwing, erupted and police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Members of the "Weathermen", a radical faction of the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) were implicated in the organization of the protests.
