Clipping on the back, "Apr. 14, 1940--Panorama of a ruined city: Here is what San Franciscans saw as they trudged back from refugee camps as the flames abated. This is a series of pictures taken from the top of the Fairmont Hotel, looking east and south. The devastation is shown from the Telegraph Hill region on the left, alon the waterfront to beyond California Street on the right. Most landmarks have been obliterated, but near the middle of the picture are seen the dim outlines of the Ferry Building and Yerba Buena Island. Ruins of old St. Mary's Church, center foreground, and Grace Church, right foreground." Another clipping dated April 18, 1951 says virtually the same as the above. Another piece of the photo has come apart from the whole, measures 10in x 14.5in.
