B&W photograph, mounted. Men lounging on steps Artist note: At Mr. Piper's house men on Mr. Piper's steps. Recent (rc prints) include a print of these men as seen from the side. This picture was in the De Young exhibition and Joanne overheard a museum-goer say something like "see, if these guys would just get up and get a job, the neighborhood would improve." Joanne felt bad that she'd perhaps shown a compromising view and held her neighbors up for negative comment. But later she wondered "did the callous viewer notice the age of these men? Did he (it was a he) have any sense of responsibility for the degraded condition of this part of the city? How quick to judgment and to displace all responsibility this viewer was.
