Description: View from the top of a building looking down onto Berkeley's Sather Gate. Much of the street's buildings and signs can be seen. Many period cars are parked along the sidewalk. It is Berkeley in 1939. Photo caption reads: Telegraph Avenue's gateway to the University of California campus in Berkeley in the 1880s was guarded by a white picket fence and turnstile as sketched above from an actual photograph by Tribune staff artist Gene Cartwright. Not until 1911 was famed Sather Gate erected in memory of Peder Sather by his widow Jane. A series of two-story frame boarding houses were on Telegraph Avenue just outside Sather Gate at the time. But a few years later merchants and cafe owners took over the avenue above Bancroft to operatre shops for the benefit of students. By 1939 upper Telegraph Avenue appeared as shown in the photo to the right. There was talk that year of moving Sather Gate down to where Telegraph meets Bancroft Avenue.
