This is an early photograph. I went down to Carmel because I was considering settling there. And I was walking down the beach to see the Jeffers, somebody told me I could make myself known to the Jeffers - my friends the di Angulos knew them. And I saw this kelp on my way. Now this print is a little on the light side. I have the negative of it and would like to reprint it. This picture and that "Plant Form with Glass" (that was in the Stuttgart show) picture was kind of in response to Imogen's [Cunningham] magnolia. Everybody was doing something like that; but, of course, me I was always just a little iconoclastic. We did a lot of toning in those days and this one I think has stood up rather well."(Roger Sturtevant, interview with Joyce Minick, transcribed in catalog sheets, c. 1977)
