Powder horn. Date: 1846. History: Used in Mexican War. Has "Battle of Palo Alto May 8 & (, 1846. Monterey Sept. 22 & 23, Buenavista Feb. 23" stained on it. Description: Powder horn with string, decorated; used in Mexican War. Has "Battle of Palo Alto May 8... 1846. Monterey Sept. 22 & 23, Buenavista Feb. 23" stained on it. Condition: Fair; has a hole with a nail on side, near wide end, with a large split starting from it; it has several small black dots in edge near wide end. (B.Hopp 1982) The curved powder horn has a domed wood plug at the butt end and tapers to a conical pouring spout. The color gradations vary from highly contrasting areas of dark and light brown. The horn is decorated with a cannon surmounted by an eagle, the American flag, martial motifs, scrollls and bears the legend "BATTLES.OF..PALO ALTO./MAY 8. &.9.1846./MONTERREY.SEPT.22 &. 23./BUENA VISTA FEBRUARY 23." The carrying strap is made from braided fiber. The horn measurs 12 1/4" overall. The butt end measures 2 7/8 and 2 3/8" at its major and minor axes with the horn tapering to an outside diameter of 3/8" at the spout.
