The notation on the front of the photo reads "View from College Tower, 1869." Reading from "Oakland Story of a City" p. 102, we get the following language describing "The tower and large building behind the trees are some of the buildings on the campus of of the College of California before it became the University of California and moved to Berkeley..... which extended from Twelfth to Fourteenth streets and from Franklin to Harrison." Ergo, tha ssumption that this is the college shown in the photo. A number of large wooden buildings are shown in the middle ground across a dirt road, and a large number of smaller homes are below the horizon.
