Content description:
The photo is a "mug shot" of a protester who has been arrested during an Oakland Tribune demonstration. Two helmeted police officers flank an African American male who has been arrested. They are standing in front of a police paddy wagon. One of the officers is holding a small card in front of the protester. The card reads, "A 1". The demonstrator is wearing a white cap and a white armband with the letters "OR" partially visible. On the back of the photo the name "Willie Hart" has been written in blue ink. Two other words have been crossed out. Also attached to the back of the photo is a sheet of paper with typed information about the demonstrator. This reads: "Willie Hart, DOB 12/15/44, has given addresses 42 Santa Cruz Ave., San Francisco, and 363 Page St., Apt. 11, San Francisco. San Francisco arrest no. 187 695 Participated in Palace sit-in March 1, 1964, Cadillac sit-in March 14, 1964, Auto Row demonstration April 11, 1964, Mel's Drive-in (S.F.) 3/11/63. Arrested all times." In 1964 the Ad Hoc Committee to End Discrimination organized a number of demonstrations to protest racial discrimination in hiring practices, including protests against Sheraton-Palace, Auto Row, Mel's Drive-in, and the Oakland Tribune. The Ad Hoc Committee picketed The Tribune building after William F. Knowland, editor and general manager of The Tribune, rejected hiring demands of the Ad Hoc Committee. The Ad Hoc Committee charged that the percentage of minority racial group employment was inadequate, and demanded that minority racial group employment on The Tribune be increased to between 15 and 20 percent of the total employment by December 15, 1964.
