Handwritten on the back, "Mens Gym Cal. U.S.F. Dons after winning from Cal. Tall guy at left is Bill Russell. Phil Woolpert man with glasses waving in back." Photo shows most of the basketball team still in their uniforms sitting and standing in a group laughing and waving for the photo. On the left side of the photo is Bill Russell, standing sideways, with his arm around a priest who is also laughing and waving. Russell was raised in Oakland. He played for U.S.F. from 1955-1956 where they were the NCAA champions. He played with the Boston Celtics, and was voted Most Valuable Player five times and eleven times went to the all-star team. He was the first black coach of any major league team.
