One of the photo taken by Doc Rogers in the aftermath of the 1906 Earthquake in San Francisco. [We do not have his original negatives.] A clipping on the back, "Apr. 13, 1947--In many sections of the still-smouldering city women cooked in the streets, preparing meals on makeshift stoves." Another clipping dated Apr. 17, 1956 says the same thing. Photo shows a woman wearing a long skirt, man's shirt, apron around her waist, shawls around her shoulders and a hankerchief over her hair, standing over a cook stove made of bricks with two pots sitting on top. She is holding a spoon in her right hand and is removing the lid off of one of the pots. Beside her is a basket full of kindling. Squatting next to the stove is a young man wearing gloves and a well-used shirt and pants with his hat. Another woman is standing next to him wearing an apron over her dress. Also standing nearby is a young girl wearing a knee-length dress, ankle boots, coat, and a shawl or blanket wrapped around her neck. She also has a large bow tied into her hair. Two men are standing in the background. Also in the background is the bottom floor of a house, that does not appear damaged from what little is in the photo.
