The Tribune photo, dated May 8, 1959, has the following caption on the back: "BIRDS NEST--A sparrow makes its home in the graceful lantern on one of 128 which may soon again be a part of Lake Merritt's famous necklace of lights. The standards and wiring which encircled the lake before World War II have fallen into disrepair. Park Board plans call for relocating the necklace on the North end of the lake if Proposition 'E' passes, May 19" This view is a close-up of a lantern hanging from a lamp post. All of the 8[?] panels of glass are missing, and a sparrow has taken the opportunity to build its nest at the bottom of the lantern.
