History: Used as decoration in the Coconut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. From the History Information Station: Object: Plastic palm trees from the Coconut Grove Night Club in Los Angeles. History: The Coconut Grove Night Club in the Ambassador Hotel was one of the most stylish night spots in the 1920s and 1930s. Movie and radio stars went there to see others, and to be seen themselves by members of the entertainment industry and by their fans. The Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Boulevard was a Los Angles landmark. Before World War I, Wilshire was a dirt road running between bean and barley fields, and connecting dispersed housing developments. When the enormous and lavish hotel opened in 1921, with its gardens, fountains, and a swimming pool with its own sandy beach, it brought enough traffic to make Wilshire a boulevard, stimulating further the vigorous suburban growth of the 1920s.
