According to the notation on the back of the photo, this is a scene in San Leandro in 1866. In the foreground are two fenced lots, the one on the left is bounded by a plank fence, the one at the right by a picket fence. The one at the right has a garden in which are planted small trees and vegetables [?] in rows. In the background are houses; commercial, and farm buildings. They are separated from the fenced properties in the foreground by a wide swath of vacant land.
