What is now Interstate 680 runs from lower right to upper left, between Concord off to the left and Danville off to the right. What is now Highway 24 runs from Oakland at bottom right to the interchange between it and (later) 680. Mt. Diablo looms in the background. The Tribune clipping on the back of the photo, dated Jan 20 1858, reads "BOON TO MOTORISTS This is a view of the progress of the $7,925,295 Walnut Creek bypass which, when completed in mid-1960's, will allow Oakland traffic to Danville and Concord to avoid downtown Walnut Creek.
