Material/Technique:
Coiled peeled willow, split and peeled sedge root, mallard duck feather, chicken feather, quail feather, olivella, and abalone
Physical description:
Ceremonial basket commissioned by the Oakland Museum of California from Linda Yamane, Ohlone basket weaver. Linda Yamane started collecting materials in 2009 and completed the basket in 2012. It is a ceremonial basket, flared shaped, coiled, made with peeled willow sticks, woven with split and peeled sedge root (runners) and decorated with olivella shells arranged in arrow design, with a background of chicken feathers dyed red (to imitate the traditional woodpecker scalp feathers, which are not legal to gather now), and a final row of mallard duck feathers near the rim. It has four danglers made of olivella shells with an abalone shell end. Where the danglers meet the basket, there are quail top knot feathers attached. The basket also has some olivella shells in the interior, marking the olivella shell decoration placement outside. (It has 89 feet of coil, every 2" of coil needs 30" of sedge; abalone is attached with modern thread; quail topknots wrapped and attched to basket with deer sinew)
