Photograph shows an accident involving a butane tanker truck on Highway 80. The trailer is flipped on its side and but the cab of the truck is still upright, but severaly mashed. The truck is on fire. The passanger door of the cab is open and the driver is trapped inside the truck, laying across the seat. A stream of water is coming in to the picture from the left side. Apparently, firefighters could not put the blaze out nor could they get the driver out with the fire still going, so they kept the driver wet with a constant stream of water until the fire went out. At one point, the fire truck was almost out of water and the driver could feel the heat of the fire. He asked that somebody shot him because he did not want to be burned alive. Soon after, another fire truck arrived with more water. The man survived the accident and fire. Russ Reed had seen the accident from his airplane. He landed the plane and drove to the accident site to capture this photograph. (from Steve LaVoie, Tribune librarian).
