Typed on the side of the photo, "(Ch11) Chicago, Aug. 13-- THE DELEGATES WERE SLOW ARRIVING-- This was the scene during singing of the Star Spangled Banner as the Democratic National Convention opened here today. Hewing to tradition, the delegates were slow in arriving with possibly no more than 500 on hand shortly after session started. (AP Wirephoto) (m21228stf) 1956." Tribune caption on the back, "BIG SHOW START IS CHICAGO- This was the scene during singing of the Star Spangled Banner as the 32nd Democratic national convention opened in Chicago today. There were some vacan t seats in the Amphitheatre in the early moments but the delegates were pouring in and soon filled the huge arena." Photo was taken from high up in the stands and shows the mostly empty seats in the stadium floor.
