Clipping on the back, "May 10, 1981--Movers prepare to whisk the Raiders' office equipment to Los Angeles last year." Photo shows two large moving trucks in front of the Raiders building. From exhibition label: "RAIDERS LEAVE OAKLAND, OR, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE COLISEUM, February,1982-- Despite years of sell-outs and arguably the NFL's best fit between a team and the community it represented, the Raiders in 1982 left for what Managing General Partner Al Davis apparently thought would be the greener pastures of Los Angeles. Davis said he left because of Oakland Coliseum inadequacies. Oakland officials claimed he left for promises of luxury boxes and other revenue potential brought about by having an NFL franchise in the nation's second largest market area. The move set off a seven year legal battle with Oakland that Davis eventurally won. But the luxury boxes never materialized at the L.A. Coliseum and the Raiders never approached widespread popularity in Los Angeles, despite winning Super Bowl XVIII, following the 1983 season. There were rumors of further franchise moves to Irwindale, to Sacramento, to Inglewood, even back to Oakland, but the Raiders played in L.A. through the 1994 season.
