Cohen had, in 1863, established the first railroad and ferry system in Alameda County; it transported passengers from a depot in the city of Alameda to San Francisco. In 1865 he became chief attorney for the Central Pacific Railroad, which completed the western portion of the Transcontinental Railraod and landed passengers at Coehn's depot.
