Transferred from the collections of the Amador County Museum. This carte de visite from the "Album Views of California" series shows Oakland Ferry in center. It was built in 1875 from the side wheel steamer Chrysopolis, operated for Central Pacific then Southern Pacific until 1941. Steamer Washoe is also depicted. The Steamer Washoe blew up in 1864 (as cited in "Paddle Wheel Days" by Jerry Mac Mullen, 1944) so the Oakland Ferry shown in the photograph cannot be of the reconstructed Ferry from 1875. Also the photographers Lawrence & Houseworth were only at the address listed on the back of the cdv (317 & 319 Montgomery from 1864-1867 according to "Biographies of Western Photographers" by Carl Mautz.
