Caption from November 7, 1955, summarized the events in the early stages of the Stephanie Bryan disappearance investigation: "April 28. At about 4 p.m., April 28, 1955, Stephanie Bryan and Mary Ann [sic: Anne] Stewart, walking from school, parted company on the corner of Ashby Ave. and Domingto St. (A) [parenthetical letters correspond to affixed letters on photograph]. Mary Ann told police afterwards she had `the distinct impression' that Stephanie turned into the Key System right-of-way (B) below Claremont Hotel. Stephanie's normal route home from this point was up the stone steps (hidden by the trees at C), throught the Claremont parking lot (D), up another set of steps and a path (E) to Alvarado Road and around Alvarado to her family's 131 Alvarado (F). She never arrived... This news, flashed to the police by her father, Dr. Charles Bryan, launch a giant search for the girl." Stephanie and Mary Anne attended Willard Jr. High School on Telegraph Avenue. Mary Anne eventually testified in the trial of Burton Abbott. For negatives of her trial appearance, see h96.1.1428, h96.1.1429, and h96.1.1430.
