The photo is a "mug shot" of a protester who has been arrested during an Oakland Tribune demonstration by members of the Ad Hoc Committee to End Discrimination. Two helmeted police officers flank an African American male who has been arrested. They are standing in front of a blank stone wall, and one of the officers is holding a card in front of the protester. The card reads, "A 3". The demonstrator is wearing a cowboy hat and a white armband. On the back of the photo the name "Mark Comfort" has been written in blue ink. Two other words have been crossed out. Also, attached to the back of the photo is a sheet of paper with typed information about the demonstrator. This reads: Mark Comfort, alias Mark Moody, address same as on report. DOB 2/6/34 San Francisco arrest no. 187-847 Participated in Mel's Drive-in sit-in 11/3/63 , Palace Hotel sit-in March 1, 1964, Palace Hotel sit-in March 7, 1964 And the word "Arrested" written in blue ink. In 1964 the Ad Hoc Committee to End Discrimination organized a number of demonstrations to protest racial discrimination in hiring practices, including protests against Sheraton-Palace, Auto Row, Mel's Drive-in, and the Oakland Tribune. The Ad Hoc Committee picketed The Tribune building after William F. Knowland, editor and general manager of The Tribune, rejected hiring demands of the Ad Hoc Committee. The Ad Hoc Committee charged that the percentage of minority racial group employment was inadequate, and demanded that minority racial group employment on The Tribune be increased to between 15 and 20 percent of the total employment by December 15, 1964.
