A large carriage filled with people that is drawn by two horses appears at center moving to through standing water. A man carrying an infant through water up to his knees appears at lower right. Several buildings are visible in the distance across the top of the image. A building at top center has a sign that reads, "C. Muller Market." People on horseback or in carriages also appear in the distance among the buildings. Original damage to the engraving is visible in the photograph such as a hard vertical crease at center and a loss at bottom right. On verso: "Cor. Alameda + First Streets Los Angeles - Jan. 19 - 1886 - Flood" handwritten in blue ballpoint pen. Blue ink stamp at center reads, "Commercial Studios / Photographers / M. L. Cohen Co. GL. 1-9717 / 1116 Franklin St. / Oakland, - California.
