Handwritten note in Proof Sheet Binder Volume 33: Guggenheim '41 This is the record of a poor period, I was tired out to begin with, truly exhausted from many duties and set out with a sense of deflation, pushed by Paul and his energies. It was the beginning of the Guggenheim which I cherished. In the .....(illegible) were not ...(illegible) for me. We went to Amana. It was hum(?) hot, dense abd there had been no rain; Skies thick as they are in East in Summer. I didn't work well. Spring 1957 - As I read the above (working form bed) it seems as though I must have been born tired. April '58 My limitations are obvious. I am about to go to Asia (and Paul) and the complaint is identical - except(?) that I do not so easily deceive myself.
