A national guardsman, identified on the back of the picture as 25 year-old Robert Paxton of Santa Clara, stands guard at a barricade at the intersection of Bancroft Way and College Avenue in Berkeley on the edge of the U.C. campus. This was the first night of weeks of confrontations between protestors and police forces over the future of People's Park.
