The Tribune clipping, dated October 22, 1968, attached to the back of the photo reads "From the air 'X' marks the spot where the MacArthur Freeway, the new Grove-Shafter Freeway, and rapid transit right-of-way merge to form a beautiful geometric design in the heart of Oakland. Tribune photographer Russ Reed circling overhead in a Pacific States Aviation plane from Concord, took advantage of the clear day and his big camera lenses to show the progress on the criss-crossed junction. In the top view, the MacArthur Freeway runs from top left to bottom right, and the Grove-Shafter Freeway and rapid transit at right angles to it. Lake Merritt is in the background at the center of the picture and near the horizon, the island city of Alameda is visible. Closeup (below) shows eight curves forming a graceful pattern of on- and off-ramps and switchovers from one freeway to the other." When this photo was taken, the eastbound segment of the Grove-Shafter past the interchange is under construction and the western portion ends in stubs. The Bay Area Rapid Transit [BART] station is in between east and west segments of the Grove-Shafter on the near side of the interchange.
