From a Tribune clipping of June 8, 1936: "Oakland in 1893: Shipping confined largely to Oakland ; Lake Merritt a slough, and Key Terminal only a proposed improvement." Since this photo was taken from the same sketch as in 2000.1.1123, the text affixed to the back of that photo applies and is reprinted here: "Birdseye view of Oakland, 1893. Sketch, considerably exaggerated shows on extreme left long trestle of the old Pacific Coast Railroad, later Alameda Mole of the Southern Pacific; also slips at foot of Broadway in Oakland; Long Wharf and Oakland Mole of the SP; and pier of proposed ferry system later the Key Route. Across the estuary of San Antonio creek, route of the first ferry steamers across the Bay to San Francisco, is shown Webster street bridge (longest one) which was replaced by Harrison street bridge in September,1898. Alice street bridge had been built in 1873, and when local steam trains began operating over it between Alameda and Oakland Long Wharf the original Alameda pier at foot of Pacific avenue was abandoned. Sketch shows open channel to Lake Merritt. The 12th street dam was built in 1912 and the 7th street trestle of the SP was filled in with dirt and rock during 1917-1918.
