They are protesting discriminatory hiring practices by the Oakland Tribune. Photos show protesters picketing in front of the Oakland Tribune building. Some of the demonstrators are carrying large signs with protest slogans. The date, "Sept 26, 1964" is written in pencil on the back of the contact print. In addition, the following information is written in red grease pencil on the back of the contact sheet: "9-26 pix... ... [x with a circle around it] indicates we need blow up [check mark] indicates we have blow up [large X] means forget it" On the front of the contact sheet eighteen of the photos have been marked with red grease pencil using these different symbols.
