The handwritten notation on the back of the photo reads "Clear day for sailing on Lake Merritt." Two sloops at center, and an El Toro class sailboat on each side, are sailing on the Lake, with a backdrop of a church (at left) and apartment buildings. Both sloops fly spinnakers, and each has two persons in them, while the little El Toros carry just one each.
