A small plant stands surrounded by candles in the "New People's Park" established by a crowd of more than 400 demonstrators as a community garden near Hearst Avenue. Near the small plant is a card that reads: "Dedicated 5-25-69 by the People of Berkeley, Calif., in Memory of James Rector." Rector had been killed earlier as he observed the protests and street violence surrounding People's Park.
